DIY Fabric Covered Phone Case

Share this on:

I’ve been trying to find a Liberty print phone case for my Samsung Galaxy but have discovered that the world only caters to the iPhone user population =( Then I came across this Martha Stewart’s Decoupage formula that works with fabric and makes the decoupaged item dishwasher safe! The Martha Stewart website has instructions and a video showing how to make a decoupaged iPhone case here. I used this decoupage previously in my fabric covered mini canvas tutorial and it turned out great so figured I would give this a try.

The instructions suggest a lightweight cotton fabric if you are not using Liberty fabric. Alternatively you can try paper since this decoupage works for paper too. I used one of my favorite Liberty London prints, the Betsy S.

I first traced my phone case on a piece of paper to use as a template to cut out my fabric. I added 1/4 inches more on each side when I cut the fabric to make sure I could cover the entire case. I double checked the hole for the camera didn’t remove part of the flower in the print before cutting.

I used the shiny side of the freezer paper to protect the surface area I was working on so the decoupage wouldn’t dry on it. Then I applied decoupage to the back of my fabric and the back of my phone case.

I left some air bubbles when I smoothed the fabric over the case so the fabric ended up drying with a few air bumps. Check for air bubbles first before you set your fabric dry. I folded the corners of my fabric since the phone case edges curved up.

After the first layer of decoupage dried, I cut the excess fabric around the edges of the case and cut out the fabric around the holes for the buttons and the camera.

I applied 3 layers total on my fabric after letting each layer dry for about 1.5 hours. Here are 2 pictures of what the fabric texture looks like after the decoupage dries on the case. The fabric is not tacky and no longer feels like fabric.

Now I just need to wait 28 days for the fabric to cure. Yes, 28 days according to the instructions before it becomes dishwasher safe. I wouldn’t put this in the dishwasher but at least I can wash the case with soap and water =)

  1. What afabulous idea! I bought a fancy case with a Marimekko fabric design on it not so long ago, and it is already worn. You showed us how to make our own! Thank you!

  2. Great idea, fellow Samsung/Android user! This definitely makes a quilty statement, and if it doesn’t last forever, you’re not out much. Thanks for sharing.

  3. This is really cool! What a great idea. Amazing on that cure time, but so handy to be able to wash the case! Thank you for sharing with us at VMG Brag About It link party!

  4. I had no idea you could even do decoupage fabric so I am loving this tutorial. I’m still using a blackberry but as soon as I get a cool phone I’ll have this pinned and ready to go. Thanks so much for sharing this at our Something to Talk About Link Party. It’s awesome. Coco
