DIY Fabric Box With Lid

Share this on:

After my last fabric box, I wanted to experiment making a fabric box with a lid. I cut up leftover cereal boxes for the sides and the lid because I wanted the box to be more rigid. I used leftover fabric scraps from various projects so I was able to destash some fabric in this project too.  The lid is just attached in the back. I used basting glue to hold down the sides of the fabric since the box was too rigid to sew down after I inserted all the cereal box pieces.

Here are a few pictures of the box. I made sure it would fit my Liberty fat quarters =)

I would most likely  sew this a different way after learning from this box as I had quite a few “oops” moments. Do you ever get those when you’re trying something new?

UPDATE 6/3/2015: I made another fabric box with an attached lid that turned out better this time. Find me on Instagram @mad_for_fabric to get a sneak peak. Tutorial coming to my blog soon.

  1. What a cute fabric box and great fabric choices. I would love for you to link up to the Stitch It, Blog It, Share It Link Party going on now at BehindtheSeamsSewing.com.

  2. LOVE those Liberty fat quarters. I have some of the same ones. Your box is cool too. You may want to try Soft and Stable batting (sold ByAnnie.com). It makes a terrific firm and soft interior for projects like these (but not as cheap as recycled boxes for sure).

  3. I love this, especially the top! I have made a few fabric boxes myself, but I have never seen one with a lid like this. What a great idea!
