DIY Pincushion Ideas

Share this on:

I’ve been on a pincushion making craze lately. This is such a great project for small scraps and is quick to sew. I thought I’d share a few variations I made using my pattern. To get the instructions and free pattern on how to make this pincushion check out my previous post.

I made a slightly smaller pincushion using Christmas color fabrics in red and green including bits of Liberty Hello Kitty fabric. I scaled the pattern to print at 75% and used a 3/8″ inch seam allowance. The points for the top didn’t match exactly so I suggest not trying to scale it unless you’re okay with some inaccuracies.

Here is my mini pincushion next to the original size one for size comparison.

A while back I made some hexie flowers I posted about here. I couldn’t figure out what to do with them but I finally got an inspiration moment and sewed the flower on my pincushion top. All you need to do is use the pincushion bottom pattern and sew together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Then use that as a pattern to cut another circle for the pincushion top. I sewed a hexie flower on top but you can use a single piece of fabric instead without any decoration.

Here are the 4 I made so far. I think I have more pincushions than pins =)

I’d love to see the pincushions you made from my tutorial. If you like to make a Liberty one, check out my Etsy shop for Liberty charm packs to use for the top of your pincushion. I also listed some of the green Liberty Hello Kitty fabric if you would like to incorporate into your projects.

If you make a pincushion from my pattern to sell, I’d appreciate a credit link back to my blog.

Thanks for stopping by today and happy “mad” pincushion making!

  1. Those are really cute pincushions! I made one a couple of years ago using hexies that were left in my mom’s stash. Yours reminded me of that pincushion. I have several pincushions so that I can keep pins separated…each type of pin has its own pincushion!
